The challenge

Africam streams live wildlife from cameras across Africa, around the clock. The challenge was turning those cameras into a platform people come back to every day: somewhere to watch, to be told the moment something rare walks into frame, to join in, to learn and to support the work, all in one place and on any device.

The solution

We designed and built the new Africam platform, now live, around the cameras: live streams and highlights, instant sighting alerts, games and competitions that turn viewers into spotters, a community forum, a field guide to Africa's animals and birds, and the memberships and shop that fund it all.

In their words

Pete Stewart
“Handee rebuilt Africam from the ground up and never lost sight of what makes it special: the animals, and the people who love watching them. The platform is faster, the community is growing, and we finally have a product we can build on.”

What we built

Everything the cameras feed

One platform around the live streams: watching, playing, talking and learning, on the web and in the alerts app.

  • 01

Every camera, live, in one place

All the live cameras on one screen, with Recent Alerts showing what's been spotted in the last few minutes, where, and how rare the sighting is.

  • 02

    Instant sighting alerts

The iOS and Android alerts app tells viewers the moment something rare walks into frame, so nobody misses it.

  • 03

    Africam TV

Wildlife Watch streams around the clock, from sunrise game drives to night-vision predators, beside Recent Live Shows, Ranger Diaries and Conservation Stories.

  • 04

    SafariSnaps & the Photo Competition

Spot wildlife, tag what you see and climb the leaderboard, while every shared photo is automatically in the running, ranked by likes.

  • 05

    A community around the cameras

Boma Chat runs beside every stream, and the forum links threads straight to the stream or highlight being discussed.

  • 06

    A field guide, built in

Animals A–Z and Birds A–Z give every species its own profile, with rarity, tags and the facts behind it.

Every product decision on Africam serves one thing: the animals in front of the cameras. These are the moments the platform exists to carry, live, to anyone, anywhere.
